About Dr. Smillie

I am a third generation Hamiltonian. My father and grandfather both worked in the steel industry. I feel that provided me with a solid and grounded foundation. This upbringing shaped my values that health care is a personal experience that is very different for everyone. Placing oneself in the hands of another should be a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. Our office has always emphasized this concept of “personalized care.”

I attended St. Thomas More High School in Hamilton and the University of Western Ontario earning a H.B.Sc. in Genetics and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in London, Ontario. While in dental school I did an externship at the Weeneebayko General Hospital dental clinic in Moose factory on the south end of James Bay in Northern Ontario. My post-graduate education has included an intensive year-long residency at the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation and completion of a graduate program at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education.

I have been married since 1999 to Tracy who taught high school and elementary children for over 10 years. She is presently our family homemaker, life organizer, nutrition provider and, in addition to all of this, she is the care-giver to our four children.

I was very active in sports throughout youth and college. It was through athletics that I learned that it is the desire and determination to prepare to be your best that was the true measure of success.

Continuing education has always been essential in the preparation to be the best professional I am capable of becoming and to my ongoing commitment to excellence in dental care and personal leadership. I am a member of several dental associations and study groups and am involved in a multitude of hours of continuing education each year.

I enjoy skiing, hiking, hockey and soccer. I have my S4L soccer coaching certificate and have coached soccer from U6 to U19, both at both the house league and Rep levels.
